Pernahkah kamu berpikir, kenapa produk layar sentuh Microsoft diberi nama ‘Surface’? Padahal jika dipikir baik-baik, arti dari kata surface adalah permukaan atau menggambarkan bidang datar. Oho, jika kita melihat ke belakang, sejujurnya Microsoft Surface memang didesain demikian lho. Inilah generasi awal dari Microsoft Surface.
Teknologi Windows yang dioperasikan dengan layar sentuh sebenarnya dikembangkan sejak tahun 2001. Setelah melewati berbagai uji coba dan dan pengembangan, pada tahun 2005, akhirnya prototype final dari Microsoft Surface telah selesai. Lantas pada tahun 2007, Microsoft memperkenalkannya ke publik dengan nama Microsoft Surface 1.0. Berikut spesifikasinya

Selanjutnya, Microsoft dan Samsung bekerjasama mengembangkan teknologi PixelSense. PixelSense sendiri merupakan semacam pengembangan lebih lanjut dari Microsoft Surface 1.0. Hasilnya, pada ajang CES2011 Samsung dan Microsoft mengenalkan sebuah produk dengan nama SUR40.

Sayangnya, harga dari Microsoft Surface generasi pertama pada saat itu sangatlah mahal. Yaitu mencapai $10.000 USD. Samsung SUR40, yang berharga $8.400 USD juga tidak begitu diminati di pasar enterprise, padahal sudah memakai SDK Microsoft Surface 2.0.
Saat ini, beberapa kafe, restoran, dan kasino kelas atas, masih memakai produk ini sebagai meja mereka. Berkat adanya teknologi PixelSense, meja ini bisa mendeteksi cangkir, koin, hingga kartu. Sayangnya sejak kehadiran genarasi tablet Surface, belum ada kabar akan adanya generasi penerus dari meja Surface ini.
